A wraparound porch scene unfolds across our hand-painted terracotta vase. From the intricate wicker armchair and classic balustrade to the verdant potted plants, every detail leads the eye through columned archways toward a landscape reminiscent of the Catskills or Aspen.
The artist works in a folk-art tradition, but with a careful hand. The wicker texture is rendered stitch by stitch, and the layered depth through the porch columns gives the scene genuine spatial weight. It’s a small canvas that earns a long look.
There’s also a quiet tension at play in the form itself. The vase’s silhouette draws from classical Greek vessels, an amphora-like profile that carries echoes of antiquity. The columned porch painted across its surface plays into that same architectural language, yet the scene it frames is decidedly American. Old World form, New World reverie!
The vase is thrown from warm red-clay terracotta, left visible on the underside, and finished in a creamy white glaze that sets off the painted scene. The base is hand-signed and dated ‘87, adding a layer of unique provenance to the piece.
