Florentine boxes date back to the renaissance when Florence was reigning supreme within the fine arts. During the mid-late 1800s, this renaissance style reappeared and became a major attraction to the tourists visiting Florence. Small pieces like boxes were easy to transport back home and sold like hotcakes. Jumping ahead in the calendar to the 20th century, Florentine crafts became à la mode yet again with the onset of the Hollywood regency period. And to us, they have solidified themselves as classics ever since.
Our Florentine trinket box is from the 20th-century revival, and boasts a deep rose reminiscent of terracotta. The front graces us with a band of cherubs taken out of motifs from House of the Vetti in Pompeii. The additional details are rich, especially the edge work which includes a Greek key.
