This endearing piece of folk art showcases the Scottish proverb “Gang East, Gang West, Hame’s Best,” a phrase that appeared frequently in needlework pattern books and magazines during the 1910s and 1920s, particularly in Britain and North America. The design reflects the popularity of domestic crafts during the interwar period, when cross-stitch samplers experienced a revival influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement’s emphasis on traditional homemaking skills.

Notably, the piece remains in its original frame, which holds historical significance in its own right. An Art Deco label on the reverse, (an appealing example of vintage branding) indicates that it was custom framed by L. Bamberger & Co., a prominent department store founded in 1892 in Newark, New Jersey. The style of the label and frame suggests the framing was done in the 1930s. Sourced in Acton, Massachusetts.

Dimensions: 9.5''H, 12.5''W.
