Details:
This artwork has a lot of layers to it. It’s a mid-century piece that draws inspiration from the ancient world. It’s a mix of Greece and Sicily, and Egypt as well!
It was crafted on papyrus paper by a Sicilian artist in 1962.
But lets’s rewind a bit, shall we?
Around 3000 BCE, the Egyptians changed the writing game when they discovered a material that retained ink without smudging. Papyrus! Many cultures (especially the Greeks) adopted this method of penning and this miracle material
prevailed as the main source for writing for centuries.
The original owners of this artwork placed a typed note on the back explaining its provenance.
“This original painting of a Greek vase is on papyrus paper which is grown and woven under water. All Egyptian documents were written on this paper.
The vase is one of many found in the ruins of Sicily. We obtained this piece of art direct from the artist in Sicily, on our European trip June to Aug. 1962
- Irene & Bruno Rapel “
The note makes the piece all the more intimate. It’s the definition of one-of-a-kind. It’s like we’re now a part of the couple’s 1962 grand tour. There are several stories attached here that take us back to ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, mid-century Sicily, and the love story between Irene and Bruno. What story will you create with it? Sourced in Brooklyn, NY.
