Fit for a Queen! This hand-colored engraving depicts Queen Victoria at age 18. It was created by John Cochran, a noted 19th-century Scottish engraver and portrait artist known for his skillful engravings after paintings by prominent artists. The original artwork for this engraving was done by Sir George Hayter in 1837. Hayter had significant royal connections, as Queen Victoria held him in high regard. She appointed him her Principal Painter in Ordinary in 1841 and knighted him in 1842!
The reproduction of paintings as engravings for wider distribution was a common practice during this era.
This engraving was framed in London in the later mid-century by Kensington Art Framers. The original sticker from the shop remains on the backside, as does the signature of a previous owner, with the date 1980.
