Painted in 1936, this serene lakeside landscape portrays the stillness of early autumn. While the precise location cannot be confirmed with certainty, the setting and provenance strongly point to New England, perhaps the White Mountains of New Hampshire or a vista in the Berkshires, both favored subjects among Massachusetts artists of the period.
The painting is signed by B.K. Bradford and dated 1936 in the lower right corner, placing it squarely within the era of American Regionalist landscape painting. Adding to its provenance, the artist also signed the board en verso, inscribing their name, “Bradford,” in a distinctive vertical cursive script.
Additionally, the reverse preserves its original framer’s label from Gramstorff Bros., Inc., a highly regarded artistic picture framing firm based in Malden, Massachusetts, active in the early to mid-20th century. This detail indicates that the work was professionally framed in Massachusetts soon after its completion and continues to be housed in its original frame.
Sourced in Acton, Massachusetts.
